Those of us who are Friends of the Worcester Archives will be sorry to hear that the Chairman, Roger Leake, is standing down as Chairman after 14 years at the helm. There is no other Chairman of any committee who is so efficient, so uncomplaining, and so likeable. Problems are few with Roger at the helm but if one does occur, you know he will quickly ‘resolve the issue’ (as they say) and everyone will go away smiling.
The Friends newsletter is always worth reading, the latest research is on Hearth Tax, chosen partly because chimneys are prominent ‘and they don’t abscond like people’. It also has four pages on the development of Worcester trams beginning in the 1830s, together with an article on cider making and excerpts from the diary of Elgar”s brother-in-law.
